Access and Compliance

In accordance with the University Mission Statement, Access and Compliance (AAC) seeks to assist students with disabilities as they participate in the “Montevallo experience”. The office strives to ensure equal access to all services, classes, and events for students with disabilities, and it is considered the primary office on campus with specialized knowledge and experience in disability access and accommodations.

  • Provides and coordinates direct services to students with disabilities. Services are individualized to meet the needs of students, based on documentation and professional judgment.
  • Provides consultation for staff and faculty to increase awareness of the needs of students with disabilities and to reduce programmatic, attitudinal and physical barriers.
  • Provides support and information for student and faculty/staff development. AAC encourages students, staff and faculty to increase knowledge of effective accommodation without altering essential functions or purposes of a program or course.  Reasonable accommodations should create equal opportunity to participate, learn, and express what has been learned.
  • Seeks to establish and maintain a balance of rights and responsibilities for both students with disabilities and the University. Furthermore, AAC seeks to develop and use non-adversarial methods to resolve problems of accessibility and accommodation.

The AAC office is located in the rear central (lower) wing of Main Hall near the offices of the Dean of Students and TRIO-Student Support Services. Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the AAC office early to discuss needed services. All requests will be responded to as quickly as possible, but some services, such as alternate format materials and disability-related housing assignments, have publicized priority deadlines.  Accommodations are not retroactive.
